Le Mayeur Museum, Art museum in Sanur, Denpasar, Indonesia
Le Mayeur Museum is an art collection housed in a traditional Balinese residence in Sanur, displaying around 90 paintings and personal belongings of the artist. The building retains carved wooden details and woven elements that form part of the living and working space.
A Belgian painter arrived in Bali in 1932 and settled permanently, marrying a local dancer and remaining until 1958. The residence became the hub of his artistic practice over these three decades.
The collection features paintings of Balinese women and daily scenes that blend European painting techniques with Indonesian subjects. Visitors can see how the artist viewed and portrayed the local life around him.
The museum is located in Sanur on Jalan Hang Tuah and welcomes visitors with the option of guided tours through the house and gardens. It is helpful to check opening hours before visiting, as schedules may vary seasonally.
The site combines living quarters, studio, and exhibition space within one building that preserves the original context where the work was created. Visitors experience not just the paintings, but also the actual environment in which they were made.
