Kalibata Heroes Cemetery, National military cemetery in Kalibata, South Jakarta, Indonesia
Kalibata Heroes Cemetery is a military cemetery in the Kalibata district of South Jakarta, Indonesia. The site stretches across a wide area and holds thousands of burial sites for soldiers, freedom fighters, and state officials laid out in neat rows under shaded trees.
The government founded this resting place in 1953 to honor fallen soldiers and distinguished figures who contributed to the country's independence. Shortly after, the first official burial took place in 1954 when a prominent politician was laid to rest here.
The name Kalibata comes from Javanese and refers to the geographic setting of the site within the capital. Walking through the grounds, visitors see people pausing at graves or placing flowers, while many families use the site to keep the memory of lost relatives alive.
Visitors can explore the grounds during daylight hours and walk among the burial sites, but should wear respectful clothing. The main office on Jalan Gatot Subroto handles inquiries by phone and helps with orientation across the wide grounds.
Some of the veterans buried here originally served in the Japanese army but remained in Indonesia after World War II to support the independence movement. These men received the honor of burial alongside local fighters despite their origins, recognizing their later loyalty.
