Bondowoso

Bondowoso is a regency in East Java that covers mountainous terrain with volcanic landscapes. The area features waterfalls, coffee plantations, and a central square called Alun-Alun at its administrative center.

Bondowoso developed during the colonial period when railway connections helped drive economic growth. A railway station built in 1893 still stands today, marking this era of industrial expansion in the region.

The people of Bondowoso are mostly Madurese and Javanese, and you can see their traditions in local celebrations and daily life. Annual festivals feature traditional dances and customs that reflect how these communities have lived together in the region.

Visitors can reach Bondowoso by traveling to nearby Jember Airport and then taking a taxi to the central bus terminal. The region is mountainous, so expect winding roads and longer travel times between different areas.

More than 1,000 megalithic artifacts from an early period have been discovered throughout the region, including standing stones, sarcophagi, and carved figures. The Pekauman site shows some of the most important finds and offers insight into the long human history of the area.
