Kutai Kartanegara Bridge, Suspension bridge in Tenggarong, Indonesia
Kutai Kartanegara Bridge is a suspension bridge that stretches 710 meters across the Mahakam River, with a main span of 270 meters supported by steel cables and two approach spans. The structure connects Tenggarong city with the opposite bank, forming a key road link for the East Kalimantan region.
The original bridge collapsed in November 2011, drawing national attention to structural safety and engineering oversight in Indonesia. The rebuilt structure was reconstructed with improved monitoring systems and updated design principles.
The bridge links Tenggarong with Tenggarong Seberang district, allowing people to cross the wide Mahakam River by foot or vehicle. Today it has become part of daily life in the region, making previously isolated communities easily accessible to each other.
Crossing takes just a few minutes and saves significant travel time between the two sides of the Mahakam River. Access is available for both pedestrians and vehicles, though care is needed during high water periods or extreme weather conditions.
While crossing, travelers can see Kumala Island, a spot in the middle of the river now used as a recreational area. The view offers a sense of how the Mahakam looked before the bridge was built.
