Shiratal Mustaqiem Mosque, Religious landmark in Samarinda, Indonesia
Shiratal Mustaqiem Mosque is a prayer house in Samarinda featuring traditional Indonesian architecture and a distinctive octagonal dome. The structure uses extensive ulin wood throughout and includes a spacious terrace at its entrance.
Religious leader Said Abdurachman bin Assegaf had the building constructed in 1881 with permission from the Sultan of Kutai. The Sultan later became its first imam, connecting him closely to the site's early years.
The mosque serves as the heart of Kampung Mesjid neighborhood, having transformed a former gambling area into a religious gathering place. People come here to pray and celebrate religious occasions that shape community life.
Visitors should wear appropriate clothing as this is an active prayer house and should respect prayer times when exploring the interior. The site is easily accessible from the outside and visitors can view the architecture and grounds at any time of day.
The distinctive tower was added in 1901 thanks to a Dutch merchant named Henry Dasen. This unexpected partnership created an architectural feature that blends European and Indonesian style elements.
