Palopo Old Mosque, Historical mosque in Palopo City, Indonesia.
The Palopo Old Mosque is a prayer house in Palopo City built with thick stone and chalk walls measuring about 1 meter thick. Five central columns divide the interior space and have defined the building's structure since its original construction.
The mosque was founded in 1604 by Datuk Sulaiman from West Sumatra while the Kingdom of Luwu was ruled by Sultan Abdullah Matinroe. This founding moment marked the establishment of a prayer center under local leadership during that era.
The mosque displays regional construction methods that reflect South Sulawesi architectural traditions. Visitors can observe how local craftsmanship blends with Islamic design principles throughout the building's structure.
The thick walls of the building keep the interior temperature comfortably cool regardless of the weather outside. The space also functions as a learning center where children pursue Quranic studies.
The main support pillar uses a special local wood called cinna gori that grows only in the South Sulawesi region. This material proved so durable that it survived for centuries, while other components like the minbar required repairs over time.
