Nagara Rimba Nusa, Urban design plan for new capital in East Kalimantan, Indonesia
Nagara Rimba Nusa is a master plan for a new capital city across approximately 255,000 hectares of land in East Kalimantan, combining residential areas, workplaces, and green spaces using modern design principles. The concept uses advanced systems for transportation and utilities while planning wind and water flows to improve environmental quality.
Indonesia's government announced in 2019 a plan to relocate the capital away from Jakarta, launching an international design competition to find the best concept. Urban+ architectural studio won the competition against 755 other entries with a plan that combines sustainability with traditional values.
The design weaves together traditional philosophical ideas with contemporary planning, creating spaces where nature and human life intertwine. Throughout the layout, you can see how the builders want people to feel connected to their surroundings and each other.
This location is a planning zone in East Kalimantan and is not fully open to visitors since development is still in its early phases. To understand the design concepts, official project information and online resources are helpful, as most of the physical infrastructure is still being built.
The project deliberately preserves large mangrove forests instead of clearing them, using these areas as natural barriers and for ecosystem protection. This choice sets it apart from many other modern city developments that typically convert forest areas entirely.
