Nusantara, Future capital city in East Kalimantan, Indonesia.
Nusantara is a planned national capital in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, covering 2,560 square kilometers between Kutai Kartanegara Regency and Penajam North Paser Regency. The site includes government districts, residential neighborhoods, and protected conservation areas organized into separate functional zones.
The Indonesian government launched the capital relocation project in 2019 after decades of discussion about overcrowding in Jakarta. Construction began in July 2022, with completion planned gradually over several years.
The city under construction is designed to represent the entire Indonesian archipelago equally, without favoring any dominant ethnic group. Workers and planners from different provinces collaborate on-site, bringing their regional perspectives into the ongoing development process.
The site is currently a construction zone accessible mainly to authorized personnel and occasional guided tours. Planned transport systems include autonomous minibuses, cycling paths, and rail connections that will become operational gradually.
During construction, soil and water from different Indonesian regions are incorporated into the foundations, symbolically connecting historical sites with the new government center. This practice is meant to physically anchor the unity of the sprawling archipelago.
