Adonara Island

This 529-square-kilometer island stands at 1,659 meters above sea level, making it the highest elevation point in the Solor Archipelago.

Portuguese traders established contact with Adonara in the 16th century, leading to the formation of three coastal principalities: Adonara, Terong, and Lamahala.

The Lamaholot ethnic group maintains distinct linguistic traditions on Adonara, with inhabitants speaking both the regional lingua franca and their local language.

Travelers reach the island through Waiwerang port via a 45-minute boat journey from Larantuka city on the eastern tip of Flores Island.

The island divides into eight administrative districts, each operating independently without a central urban hub, while maintaining traditional ethnic governance systems.
