The Big Lobster

The Big Lobster is a steel-framed structure covered in fibreglass that towers over the location and catches your eye from far away. The site includes a restaurant, visitor information center, wine tasting area, and children's playground all clustered around it.

Paul Kelly designed and built this structure in 1979 as a landmark to draw visitors to a new restaurant and information center in the area. It was created to put this small town on the map and boost local business.

Locals call this giant crustacean Larry, and it represents how much seafood and fishing have meant to people living along this South Australian coast. Walking around it, you can sense the pride locals have in their maritime traditions.

Walking around the structure gives you the best view from all angles, and you can easily pop into the facilities on the grounds. The location is accessible and straightforward to navigate, with parking and amenities nearby.

The sculptor carved interior details from foam before applying the fibreglass coating, using a real lobster as his reference guide for accuracy. This hands-on method gave the sculpture its detailed and lifelike quality.
