Princeland, Former proposed colony region in South Australia and Victoria, Australia.
Princeland was a proposed region that stretched from the Murray River southward and covered parts of two separate colonies. The territory included areas like the Western District, Wimmera, Mallee, and Limestone Coast, spanning widely across two different states.
In the 1860s, residents submitted a petition to Queen Victoria requesting a separate colony named after Prince Albert. The plan ultimately failed because both South Australia and Victoria needed to approve the change.
The region connected communities from two different colonies who shared similar farming ways and felt distant from major cities. These shared challenges shaped how people in these border areas still work together today.
The place was so large and spread across multiple regions that choosing one administration center proved difficult. Mount Gambier was considered as the main city, while Portland would have served as the shipping port.
The petition gathered over 1,500 signatures, but such an ambitious plan required approval from two rival governments. This failure shows how difficult it was to change borders between colonies, even when locals demanded it.
