J Ward

J Ward is a former prison and psychiatric hospital in Ararat that operated as both facilities during different periods. The site features stone cells, towering walls, and heavy iron doors typical of 1800s institutional architecture.

The facility was built in 1859 to hold prisoners from the surrounding goldfields during the colony's mining boom. It shifted its role in 1887 to serve people with mental illness who had committed crimes.

The museum tells the story of how people with mental illness were cared for during the 1800s in Australia. Through the objects on display, you can see what daily life was like for patients in that era.

The site welcomes visitors and offers guided tours that help you understand the layout and history of the complex. Taking a tour is the best way to explore all areas and learn what each section was used for.

One of the most memorable residents was Charles Fossard, who spent nearly 71 years at the facility as a patient. His story gives insight into how some people lived out their entire lives within these walls.
