Albert Park and Lake, Recreational park and artificial lake in Port Phillip, Australia
Albert Park and Lake is a recreational space with an artificial body of water that runs through parkland in the southern suburbs of Melbourne. The lake forms a Y shape and winds through open grass areas bordered by gum trees and palms.
The land was set aside as a public reserve by the colonial government in the mid-19th century after being home to the Boonwurrung people. The lake was created later through excavation and flooding of a shallow depression within the park.
The park functions as a central sporting venue with multiple facilities, including the Lakeside Stadium, Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, and yacht clubs.
Walking paths circle the lake and cross through different sections of the park, with most routes flat and easy to navigate. Several entrances along different roads give access to designated areas for picnics and to the edge of the water.
A large river red gum stands near a sports ground and is several hundred years old. The tree once served as a meeting place for the original inhabitants of the region.
