Fawkner Park

Fawkner Park is a large public green space in South Yarra spanning over 40 hectares with tree-lined avenues, sports fields, and connecting pathways throughout. The grounds are divided into distinct sections with grassy areas for activities and mature trees planted along the boundaries.

The park was founded in 1862 and named after John Pascoe Fawkner, one of Melbourne's co-founders. During World War II, the grounds served as a military base before being returned to public recreational use.

The park serves as a gathering place for local sports clubs and community groups who use the grounds for regular matches and training throughout the year. You can often see organized games and casual players sharing the same spaces, showing how central this place is to Melbourne's outdoor life.

The park has several entry points and is easily accessible on foot, with well-maintained pathways suitable for walking and exercise. Different areas are clearly defined, making it easy to find where you want to spend time for sports or casual visits.

The park features distinctive tree avenues, particularly mature Elm and Moreton Bay Fig trees that create a recognizable pattern across the grounds. These plantings date back to the park's earliest years and remain central to its visual character.
