Melbourne Hebrew Congregation, Orthodox synagogue in East Melbourne, Australia
The Melbourne Hebrew Congregation is a synagogue in East Melbourne, housed in a two-story Renaissance Revival building from the late 19th century. The interior features cast iron columns and galleries that run around the main hall, giving the space a layered, open feel.
The congregation was founded in 1857 under Reverend Moses Rintel, making it the oldest Jewish congregation in Melbourne. The current Albert Street building was consecrated in 1877 after the community outgrew its earlier premises.
The Melbourne Hebrew Congregation still holds regular services in the Albert Street building today, drawing members from across the city. On Jewish holidays, the space fills with families and long-standing community members who have worshipped here for generations.
A visit here requires advance arrangement, as security procedures are in place at the entrance. It is worth checking service times beforehand, especially if you want to see the interior.
Sir John Monash, who became Australia's most celebrated general of World War I, celebrated his Bar Mitzvah here and sang in the congregation's choir as a boy. This early connection to the building is part of what makes the site memorable beyond its architecture.
