Repatriation Commission Outpatient Clinic, Healthcare building in St Kilda Road, Melbourne, Australia.
The Repatriation Commission Outpatient Clinic is a brown brick building with Art Deco architectural features located adjacent to the Victoria Barracks bluestone structures. Its design reflects the style of the 1930s and integrates with the historic character of the surrounding streetscape.
This building opened in November 1937 to provide medical services to veterans returning from World War I. It was built to address the healthcare needs of soldiers who required specialized treatment and ongoing care.
Red Cross volunteers, numbering up to 25 people, supported veterans at the clinic by assisting them during their medical appointment waiting times.
The facility contained specialized examination rooms, modern air conditioning systems, and large waiting areas designed specifically for patient care. Its layout supported the efficient handling of high daily visitor numbers.
The building maintained a direct connection to surviving World War I veterans, while most memorials focus on fallen soldiers. This makes it a rare location that reflects the personal stories of those who came home.
