Shrine of Remembrance, War memorial at Kings Domain on St Kilda Road, Melbourne, Australia.
The Shrine of Remembrance is a stone war memorial in Kings Domain along St Kilda Road in Melbourne, Australia. The structure rises over several levels and includes a central sanctuary with a surrounding colonnade, further galleries below, and a forecourt with steps and pathways.
Dedicated on November 11, 1934, the memorial was inaugurated by the Duke of Gloucester before over 300,000 people and was intended to honour Australian soldiers from the First World War. Later extensions added underground galleries and a visitor pavilion to commemorate all conflicts.
Melbourne residents and visitors come to this memorial to honour fallen soldiers, often pausing at photographs, letters, and helmets carried by Australian troops displayed in the interior galleries. The memorial also hosts the Last Post ceremony every Sunday, where a bugle call echoes through the sanctuary and draws families and veterans together.
The Last Post ceremony takes place every Sunday at 4:45 PM, and guided tours are offered several times throughout the day. The site is centrally located and easy to reach on foot, by tram, or by bus.
A ray of sunlight passes through an opening in the ceiling and strikes the Stone of Remembrance at precisely 11 AM on November 11, illuminating the inscription for a few seconds. This precise alignment was calculated during the design and works each year.
