Melbourne Recital Centre, Concert venue in Southbank, Australia
The Melbourne Recital Centre is a performance venue in Southbank with two auditoriums, the larger Elisabeth Murdoch Hall accommodating around 1000 people across two levels. The spaces allow for both intimate chamber performances and larger classical concerts.
The venue opened in 2009 as part of a larger Southbank cultural complex designed by the architecture firm Ashton Raggat McDougall. It was built during the period when the area underwent major redevelopment as an arts and entertainment destination.
The venue hosts over 500 annual performances spanning classical, chamber music, jazz, world music, contemporary, and electronic genres.
The building features specialized concrete walls mounted on steel springs that effectively block outside noise from trams and traffic. This design ensures performances proceed without interference from external sounds.
The interior walls are constructed using carefully selected Hoop Pine plywood panels that significantly enhance the acoustic quality of the performance spaces. This material choice was deliberate to optimize sound for both performers and listeners.
