Eureka Tower, 297-meter high-rise building in Southbank, Melbourne, Australia
Eureka Tower is a residential high-rise in Southbank, Melbourne, Australia, standing 297 meters (975 feet) tall and occupying 91 floors above street level. The facade combines aluminum panels with blue-tinted glass, housing apartments throughout most floors and a public viewing deck near the top.
The building was constructed between 2002 and 2006, and when it opened it was the tallest residential tower outside Dubai. A gold-plated crown at the summit honors the gold rush era that shaped Melbourne into an economic center during the 19th century.
The name refers to a rebellion at a gold mining camp in 1854, when miners protested unfair taxes and licenses. Blue glass along the facade recalls the flag used by the rebels, while a red stripe marks the bloodshed that followed.
The observation deck on the 88th floor offers views across the city and can be reached using high-speed elevators from the ground entrance. Once on the platform, 20 viewing devices help identify individual buildings and landmarks around the area.
On the 89th floor sits a restaurant positioned 292 meters (958 feet) above the ground, the highest dining room in the Southern Hemisphere. Visitors can enjoy Australian cuisine there while taking in wide views over the city and the bay.
