Junction Oval, Cricket field in St Kilda, Australia
Junction Oval is a cricket ground in the suburb of St Kilda in Melbourne, set on several hectares and bordered by two older grandstand buildings on its southern side. The grass playing field sits in the center, surrounded by an oval running track, with modern administration and changing facilities standing along the eastern edge.
The ground was laid out in the mid-1800s and later served as the home venue for a local football club until the 1960s. Over the following decades, it hosted a range of sports events before becoming a focus for cricket in Victoria.
The oval takes its name from the nearby tramway junction that once connected multiple lines through the suburb. Local cricket teams now use the facility for training and matches, and the old grandstands give spectators a view over the playing surface and the surrounding trees.
The entrance is on Fitzroy Street, and visitors can reach the oval on foot or by tram, which stops nearby. On match days, the grandstands are open to spectators, while on other days you can walk around the perimeter and see the playing field from the outside.
A well-known Australian cricketer made his first-class debut here in the early 1990s. The oval is also listed on the Victorian heritage register, which recognizes the architectural value of the old grandstand buildings.
