St Kilda Library, Public library in St Kilda, Australia
St Kilda Library is a public library built with exposed concrete surfaces and bold geometric shapes, displaying deep overhangs and spandrels throughout. The structure was later extended with bluestone cladding that represents the role of both books and digital technology.
The foundation stone was laid in August 1972 and the building opened in May 1973 with a ceremony led by the Governor of Victoria. An extension was added between 1992 and 1994 by architects Ashton Raggatt McDougall.
The library hosts storytimes in multiple languages including Amharic, Arabic, German, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. These sessions serve to connect with the diverse communities in the neighborhood.
The facility is open Monday through Wednesday until 8 PM, Thursday and Friday until 6 PM, Saturday until 5 PM, and Sunday from 2 PM. Plan your visit according to these hours to make the most of your time.
The bluestone extension was specifically designed to visually represent the connection between traditional books and modern technology in library services. This architectural choice reflects how the role of libraries has evolved over time.
