Como House

Como House is a historic mansion in South Yarra combining Australian Regency and Italianate architectural styles set on an expansive property. Formal gardens and grounds surround the main residence, creating an integrated estate landscape.

The house was built in 1847 for Sir Edward Eyre Williams and remained under family ownership for many decades before changing hands in 1959. This transfer allowed the estate to open to the public as a protected heritage site.

The house displays living patterns from the 1800s through its original furnishings, showing how wealthy families organized their daily lives and spaces. Walking through the rooms reveals personal touches and domestic routines that shaped the household.

The gardens are open to visitors during daylight hours, while access to the house interior requires joining a guided tour available on specific days. Check in advance which days tours operate, as they do not run daily.

This was the first house museum in Australia to preserve its complete original interior collection, making it exceptionally rare among heritage properties. The intact furnishings offer visitors an unfiltered look at how one household accumulated and displayed its possessions over time.
