Victorian Artists Society, Art school and gallery in East Melbourne, Australia
The Victorian Artists Society is an art center in East Melbourne, housed in a heritage-listed bluestone building on Albert Street. The building contains four exhibition galleries, teaching spaces, and a traditional studio where various artistic techniques are practiced.
The society was founded in 1870 by early impressionist painters and later grew through the merger of the Victorian Academy of Arts and the Australian Artists' Association in 1888. This union made it a leading artistic institution in Victoria.
The society has long served as a gathering place for artists working in different styles and continues to shape the local art scene. People come here to connect with others and display their work.
The center is open to visitors from 10 AM to 4 PM on weekdays and 11 AM to 4 PM on weekends. Entry is free and accessible facilities are available.
Between 1915 and 1931, the building housed a music conservatory directed by opera singer Nellie Melba. A commemorative plaque from 2014 marks this important chapter.
