Aurora Melbourne Central is a 270.5-metre residential skyscraper of 86 storeys, with 959 apartments and 252 serviced apartments. Its upper shaft is a plain vertical slab, while the lower section widens into curved, rounded forms clad in blue-tinted glass with darker mullions; one edge steps back in a stair-like shape.
The site at 224-252 La Trobe Street was proposed in 2014 and approved by Planning Minister Matthew Guy in October 2014. Probuild began the $730 million construction in October 2015, the tower topped out in late 2018 and was finished in 2019, when it stood as Melbourne's second-tallest building behind the Eureka Tower.
The tower's name comes from the aurora australis, the southern lights, and from the shopping centre of the same name. It replaced the earlier designation 224-252 La Trobe Street, taken from the 3,197 m2 site's address.
