Bendigo Post Office, Victorian Heritage Register post office in Bendigo, Australia.
Bendigo Post Office is a two-story brick structure featuring a prominent 43-meter clock tower topped with a five-bell carillon and ornate facades on every side. The building now operates as a modern visitor centre for the city while retaining its original architectural details.
The building was constructed between 1883 and 1887 by contractors McCulloch and McAlpine following architect George W. Watson's Second Empire design. It reflects Bendigo's prosperous gold mining era when the city experienced rapid growth.
Since 1997 the building has served as a tourism visitor centre with a gallery dedicated to First Nations artists and a space for contemporary art exhibitions. Visitors can discover works by regional creators and learn about the local artistic community.
The building sits on Pall Mall next to Rosalind Park and is easily reached on foot from most central locations. Inside you will find visitor information services alongside rotating art exhibitions throughout the year.
The building underwent a comprehensive nine-year restoration from 1978 to 1987 that preserved its original architectural elements while modernizing the interior. These careful renovations allowed the historic structure to adapt to contemporary use without losing its character.
