Golden Dragon Museum, Chinese cultural museum in Bendigo, Australia
The Golden Dragon Museum is a museum in central Bendigo, Victoria, dedicated to the history of Chinese Australians in the region. It holds artifacts, photographs, and documents that shed light on the lives of Chinese immigrants who settled in the area during the gold rush era.
The museum opened in 1991 to keep alive the legacy of Chinese immigrants who came to the Victorian goldfields from the mid-19th century onward. Their presence shaped much of Bendigo's early community life.
The museum displays Loong and Sun Loong, two of the longest ceremonial dragons in the world, which are still carried through the streets of Bendigo during festivals. Seeing them up close helps visitors understand how central they remain to the local Chinese-Australian community.
The museum sits in central Bendigo and is easy to reach on foot from most parts of the city center. Allow enough time for both the indoor exhibitions and the garden outside, as there is plenty to take in.
Sun Loong, the dragon kept at the museum, once held the record as the longest ceremonial dragon in the world, stretching over 330 feet (100 meters). It has taken part in Bendigo's Easter festival for well over a century and is still brought out for special occasions.
