Shepparton, Regional administrative center in northern Victoria, Australia.
Shepparton sits on the Goulburn River floodplain and covers more than 2,400 square kilometers with several towns and farming areas. The city is home to about 68,000 people spread across fourteen smaller settlements.
Settlement started in the 1840s with the Tallygaroopna sheep station under Sherbourne Sheppard. Official foundation as a city came in 1860 and took his name.
The Yorta Yorta call this area Kanny-goopna, a name that refers to deep waterholes. Such gathering places remain alive in the stories and memory of the local community today.
Greater Shepparton City Council runs service centers in Shepparton and in Tatura. These two locations provide access to information for all fourteen smaller towns in the region.
