Sheffield, Mural town in northwest Tasmania, Australia.
Sheffield is a small town in northwest Tasmania, located about 23 kilometers south of Devonport. The surrounding area is dominated by dairy farms, while Mount Roland rises nearby as a protected natural area.
The town was founded in 1859 and named after Sheffield in England. Major growth came from the 1963 Mersey-Forth Power Scheme, which brought significant change to the area.
More than 140 painted murals decorate the town's buildings, telling stories of the local area, nature, and the people who live here. You see these artworks everywhere as you walk around, turning the place into an open-air gallery.
You can spend time walking around to explore the murals and take photographs at your own pace. Lake Barrington nearby offers facilities for fishing, canoeing, and picnicking if you want to combine your visit with outdoor activities.
Every year, nine artists compete for six days at the International Mural Fest to create new artworks based on a selected poem. This keeps the town constantly evolving as new art continues to appear.
