Freycinet Marine Park, Marine protected area off eastern Tasmania, Australia
Freycinet Marine Park is a protected marine area off the coast of Tasmania and stretches across a large region with varying ocean depths. It contains underwater mountains, canyons, and granite formations that create diverse habitats throughout the zone.
The park was established to protect a large region of southeastern waters that became better understood only in recent years through deep-sea exploration. Early scientific missions discovered previously unknown coral communities in the depths off Tasmania's coast.
The Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies conducts regular photographic surveys of seafloor communities using autonomous underwater vehicles throughout the park.
The park is mainly intended for research purposes, but is also accessible to divers and nature observers depending on conditions in different zones. Visitors should note that access depends on private boats or organized scientific expeditions.
The area is home to rare black corals in shallower coastal depths, long thought to exist only in much deeper oceans. This discovery significantly changed understanding of coral habitats in Tasmanian waters.
