Buchan Caves

Buchan Caves is a limestone cave system in Victoria featuring extensive underground chambers connected by natural passages. The network stretches about 400 meters and displays stalactites, stalagmites, and mineral-rimmed pools formed by water seeping through the rock over countless centuries.

The cave system formed over millions of years as underground rivers carved passages through ancient limestone bedrock in the Gippsland region. This slow geological process created one of Victoria's most significant natural formations.

The Krauatungalung people of the Gunaikurnai nation consider this place sacred, and it remains important to Aboriginal communities today. You can sense this deeper meaning as you move through the caves, where culture and landscape are closely connected.

Visitors can explore the caves through guided tours offered for two different routes: Royal Cave and Fairy Cave, each with its own character and discoveries. You should prepare for uneven ground and stairs as you move through the passages underground.

The cave system maintains a constant temperature of about 17 degrees Celsius year-round, creating a naturally cool retreat in the Australian wilderness. This stable environment allows specialized cave creatures to thrive in the darkness below.
