Mr. Stringy, Folk art sculpture in Tambo Crossing, Australia.
Mr. Stringy is a wooden figure carved from stringybark timber, standing about 1.67 meters (5.5 feet) tall with a notably oversized head and torso. The sculpture sits along the Great Alpine Road and captures attention through its bold, simple shape.
The original carving was created in 1929 but suffered repeated damage from vandalism. Bill Henham produced the current version in the 1960s, which has remained in place since then.
The local community regularly repaints the figure, transforming it to represent different characters and themes that matter to the region. This active practice shows how the sculpture has become woven into everyday life here.
The sculpture sits roughly 58 kilometers northeast of Bairnsdale and is easy to reach from the Great Alpine Road. The location works well for travelers passing through the area.
In 2010 the figure was removed by unknown people and thrown down a nearby slope, but it was later found and restored. This incident shows how deeply connected the sculpture is to local memory.
