Wirraminna Environmental Education Centre, Botanical garden in Burrumbuttock, Australia
Wirraminna Environmental Education Centre is a four-hectare botanical garden in Burrumbuttock featuring a large dam, wetlands, and natural woodland. The site includes native plant beds displaying species from Box-Gum Grassy Woodlands and a visitor center with exhibitions about local wildlife.
The center was established in 1995 on a former livestock reserve that had served as Public Watering Place 443 since 1904. This transformation shows how the land shifted from agricultural use to environmental education.
The Discovery Centre displays aquaria with native fish from the Murray-Darling Basin and houses Southern Corroboree frogs in dedicated areas. Visitors can observe how these animals fit into the local environment and why they matter to the region.
The site welcomes school groups throughout the year and is designed for educational programs, so visiting with guided offerings is recommended. Local volunteers maintain the grounds regularly, which means conditions may vary depending on seasonal activities and maintenance work.
The visitor center was built with rammed earth in 2005 and features extensive interpretative signage explaining local environmental narratives. This building approach and the educational displays create a tangible example of sustainable design and environmental storytelling.
