Perisher Valley, Administrative division in Snowy Monaro Regional Council, Australia.
Perisher Valley is a mountain valley in Kosciuszko National Park, running along Kosciuszko Road between Jindabyne and Charlotte Pass. It sits at around 1,720 meters (5,640 ft) elevation and is home to a cluster of mountain lodges and ski runs that define its layout.
The valley was used as cattle grazing land in the late 19th century before it became part of Kosciuszko National Park in 1906. Ski runs were gradually developed through the 20th century, turning what was open pasture into a winter destination.
The Snowy Mountains of Music Festival takes place every year on the Queen's Birthday long weekend, marking the start of the ski season with live performances. The setting, surrounded by ski runs and mountain lodges, gives the event a character quite different from a typical music festival.
Winter is when most facilities are open and the ski runs are in use, making it the most active time to visit. In summer, the area remains accessible via Kosciuszko Road and offers hiking through the surrounding mountain terrain.
Perisher Valley sits on the Australian mainland and is one of the very few places in the country where snow falls and stays on the ground for several months each year. This makes it stand out in a continent otherwise known for warm and dry conditions.
