The limestone caves formed during the early Miocene period, 22 to 18 million years ago, from shell fragments deposited in an ancient shallow sea.

The cave system holds significance for Maori people, who incorporated these natural formations into their ancestral traditions and historical narratives.

Visitors require two torches per person and must check weather conditions before entering, as the cave system experiences flash flooding during heavy rain.

The cave walls display a natural light show from resident glowworms, which produce bioluminescence to attract prey in the dark, damp environment.
