Iona Church, Heritage church building in Port Chalmers, New Zealand.
Iona Church is a Gothic Revival church building located in the maritime district of Port Chalmers, Dunedin. The stone structure features carefully crafted stained glass windows and sits amid green surroundings in this historic port area.
The foundation stone was laid in 1871, with an additional gallery constructed between 1882 and 1883 to accommodate the growing congregation. These building phases reflect the church's increasing importance to the port community.
The church continues to serve the local community for worship and hosts concerts and special celebrations, particularly during summer when cruise ships visit the port.
Interior access is currently limited to days when cruise ships are in port, as seismic strengthening work is ongoing. Check ahead if a ship is expected or inquire about any available visiting times.
Heritage New Zealand awarded the building Category I status in 1994, placing it among the nation's most significant heritage sites. This recognition honors both its architectural quality and its cultural value to the port community.
