The Christchurch Central Police Station is an office building on Lichfield Street that serves as the main headquarters for law enforcement operations across the Canterbury region. The facility coordinates emergency response and administrative services for a wide area of the South Island.
The original building dates to 1873 and was replaced by a modern high-rise in the mid-20th century. Following severe damage from the 2011 earthquake, the structure was later demolished through controlled demolition.
The station operated as the central command point for the Canterbury Police District, managing the area from Conway River to Waitaki River.
The location is best reached on foot from the city center and sits near several public spaces and shops. The area has good walking paths and is relatively flat, which makes navigation straightforward.
The building was demolished in 2015 through a spectacular controlled implosion after it suffered severe damage in the devastating 2011 earthquake. This dramatic demolition method was necessary to safely remove the unstable high-rise structure.
