Canterbury Television, Regional television station in Christchurch, New Zealand
Canterbury Television was a television station operated from the CTV Building at the corner of Cashel and Madras Streets in central Christchurch. The station produced approximately 20 hours of local content each week and served the region until 2011.
The station began broadcasting in June 1991 as New Zealand's first regional television broadcaster. This established a new form of local television in the country.
The station was known for covering Canterbury sports events and presenting performances by local artists who were active in the community. These programs reflected the cultural life of the city and connected broadcasting directly to viewer interests.
Visitors can learn about the station's history at its original location, though the CTV Building no longer stands after the earthquake. The site is in central Christchurch and is easily accessible on foot.
The CTV Building was destroyed in February 2011 by a powerful earthquake, forcing the station to suspend operations and later continue from another location. This event marked a critical turning point in the city's local television history.
