Kahurangi National Park

Kahurangi National Park spans 5,193 square kilometers across varied landscapes, from coastal beaches to marble mountains and dense rainforests.

Established in 1996, this protected area contains archaeological evidence of Māori settlements dating back to 1380 CE along its coastline.

The park holds deep connections to Māori heritage, with ancient pā sites on coastal ridges and the discovery of the Anaweka waka from 1226 CE.

The park network includes 570 kilometers of hiking trails, with the 82-kilometer Heaphy Track requiring 4 to 6 days to complete.

The geological diversity encompasses New Zealand's longest cave system and houses 80 percent of the country's alpine plant species.
