Bason Botanic Gardens, Botanical garden in Whanganui, New Zealand.
Bason Botanic Gardens is a large botanical reserve in Whanganui featuring several themed sections including native bush, a lake, and seasonal flower displays. The property contains specialized conservatories housing diverse exotic plant collections.
The gardens originated when Stanley and Blanche Bason donated their farm to Whanganui City Council in 1966. Development of the botanical reserve began in 1971 with the transformation of the former farmland.
The gardens feature a traditional tea house reflecting Japanese design principles that visitors can explore. Sculptures placed throughout the grounds form part of the larger Coastal Arts Trail in the region.
The conservatories tend to be quieter on weekends, making them ideal for viewing the plant collections without crowds. Wear proper footwear as the paths navigate changing elevations throughout the grounds.
The conservatories were constructed from recycled bricks salvaged from two former Whanganui theaters, creating a connection between the region's cultural past and its botanical present. This building approach houses one of New Zealand's largest public orchid collections.
