Sarjeant Gallery Te Whare O Rehua Whanganui

The Sarjeant Gallery spans 4,500 square meters, featuring ten exhibition spaces, a central dome, and a west-facing atrium connecting heritage and modern sections.

The gallery, established through a bequest in 1917, underwent extensive renovations to strengthen the original Oamaru stone structure against earthquakes and add new facilities.

The gallery houses over 9,000 artworks, making it the largest public collection outside New Zealand's main centers, with commissioned pieces reflecting Whanganui's heritage.

The renovated facility includes a temperature-controlled storage area, workshop spaces, family room, reading room, library, retail space, café, and event meeting rooms.

A carved totara waka bridge connects the heritage building to the new wing, named after Sir Te Atawhai Archie John Taiaroa, designed with local iwi input.
