Rangitoto Island, Volcanic island in Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand
The symmetrical shield volcano cone rises 260 meters above sea level, featuring extensive fields of black basalt and numerous walking paths to the summit.
The island emerged from volcanic eruptions around 600 years ago, with the last recorded activity occurring approximately in the year 1400.
The name Rangitoto derives from Māori language, referring to Tama-te-kapua's battle injuries, with Ngāi Tai tribes maintaining strong ancestral connections to the land.
Regular ferry services operate from Auckland city center to Rangitoto Wharf, requiring visitors to bring their own food and water as no shops exist.
The island contains the largest pohutukawa forest in the world, supporting over 200 species of trees and flowers growing directly on volcanic rock formations.
