Manukau City, Administrative district in Auckland, New Zealand.
Manukau is an administrative district at Auckland's southern edge that combines commercial zones, residential neighborhoods, and education centers. The area features wide streets, multiple shopping centers, and a network of smaller neighborhood hubs throughout.
The district was formed in 1965 from merging Manukau County and Manurewa Borough into a single administration. This joining created a new civic center to serve the fast-growing southern side of Auckland.
The district's communities include people from European, Maori, Pacific Islander, and Asian backgrounds who have made their homes here over many years. You will notice this mix reflected in the shops, restaurants, and community spaces throughout the area.
The train station and bus terminal here connect well to central Auckland for getting around. The highways passing through make driving to other parts of the city quite convenient.
The name comes from Manukau Harbour, which was named after the wading birds that once lived in the nearby waters. This connection to nature is still visible today in the harbor and surrounding green spaces.
