Hibiscus Coast, Stretch of the Hauraki Gulf
Hibiscus Coast is a coastal region north of Auckland made up of several small towns including Orewa, Silverdale, and the Whangaparāoa Peninsula. The area stretches along the Hauraki Gulf and features long beaches, walking tracks, and nature reserves such as Shakespear Regional Park.
The area was originally home to local Maori tribes who used the coast and sea for fishing and gathering food. In recent decades, the region has become a popular residential area for families, with new developments like Millwater providing modern housing and facilities.
The name Hibiscus Coast comes from the hibiscus plants that grow throughout this region. The communities here share a relaxed culture where people spend time outdoors by the water and gather with family and friends, especially at the beaches and in the small coastal towns.
The region is easy to reach from Auckland by car or bus, located about half an hour away. Once there, visitors explore the area best on foot or by bike, as the roads are calm and the paths are manageable.
Tiritiri Matangi Island, a wildlife sanctuary nearby, is home to rare bird species like kiwis and serves as an important conservation project. The island features a working lighthouse built in 1864 that visitors can still see today.
