Te Tai Tokerau, Parliamentary Maori electorate in Northland, New Zealand
Te Tai Tokerau is a parliamentary electorate in New Zealand stretching from Cape Reinga to the Auckland Harbour Bridge. The region includes larger towns such as Whangarei and Kaitaia as well as smaller communities like Paihia, Russell, and Kerikeri alongside settlements in west Auckland.
This electorate was established in 1996, emerging from the former Northern Maori constituency as part of a restructuring of Māori parliamentary representation. The change reflected efforts to better serve the indigenous population across different regions of New Zealand.
The territory encompasses the ancestral lands of several iwi, whose names and presence remain visible in the landscape today. These communities have maintained their language, traditions, and local ways, which are reflected in place names and how people live in the region.
The region is accessible by road through several main highways connecting the various towns and communities. Allow adequate time when visiting, as distances between different settlements can be considerable.
Te Tai Tokerau maintains the highest proportion of managers among Māori electorates, with 14.9% of its workforce holding management positions.
