Ngāti Pūkenga, Māori iwi (tribe) in Aotearoa New Zealand
Ngāti Pūkenga is an iwi based in the western Bay of Plenty and Tauranga Moana on the North Island of New Zealand. The tribal area extends along the coast and inland, including marae and community gathering places.
The ancestors of the tribe arrived in the region in the 14th century aboard the Tākitimu waka and settled along the coast. Later generations formed alliances and adapted to changes brought by trade and contact with European settlers.
Visitors can experience guided tours and cultural events at certain marae but should seek permission in advance. Access to some sites is limited out of respect for the community and its traditions.
The name Pūkenga means wisdom or scholarship and reflects the role of the tribe as keepers of knowledge. Some marae preserve carved pou and taonga that tell stories of ancestors and their connection to the land.
