Iandra Castle, Heritage-listed homestead in Greenethorpe, Australia

Iandra Castle is a homestead in Greenethorpe, New South Wales, built in the Federation style with Romanesque Revival details and constructed from steel-reinforced concrete. The building has dozens of rooms spread across a large rural estate listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register.

A brick house was first built on the land in 1880, before George Greene directed the construction of the current building, which was completed in 1910. The change from a modest dwelling to a large castle-like structure shows how the region's farming fortunes grew over those decades.

The property became a center for progressive agricultural ideas in the region, attracting visitors interested in its innovative farming methods and philosophies. The buildings and gardens reflect the prosperity and forward-thinking approach of those who developed it.

The estate opens on scheduled days and also welcomes groups that book visits in advance, so it is worth checking before you travel. The grounds are large enough to take up several hours, so plan accordingly and wear comfortable shoes.

When the building was finished in 1910, it already had its own electricity generation on site, hot water, and a telephone connection in every room, which was almost unheard of in rural Australia at the time. These systems were installed as part of the original construction, not added later.
