Suma Park Dam

Suma Park Dam is an arch dam near Orange that spans across the Summer Hill Creek valley. The concrete structure creates a large reservoir that supplies drinking water to the surrounding region.

The dam was built in 1962 when Orange needed a new drinking water source to replace Lake Canobolas. This arch construction marked the beginning of a modern water supply system for the city.

The dam and its reservoir support local recreational activities, including fishing spots and walking paths that connect the regional communities.

The reservoir is accessible from local tracks that run along the water level and offer different viewpoints. Visitors should be prepared for changing weather conditions, especially when water is being released.

The uncontrolled spillway can release roughly 260 cubic meters of water per second during flood events, creating a dramatic natural spectacle. This enormous capacity is necessary to ensure the dam remains safe even during extreme rainfall.
