Taronga Western Plains Zoo, Conservation zoo in Dubbo, Australia
The 300-hectare facility features large open exhibits separated by hidden moats, creating natural spaces for over 1,000 animals from 40 different species.
The facility opened in February 1977 to give large species more space than was possible in Sydney. Today it houses over one thousand individuals from forty different species in open-range enclosures.
The Taronga Western Plains Zoo acknowledges the Wiradjuri people as traditional custodians of the land where the facility operates.
The site is open daily from 9 AM to 4 PM and offers bicycles for rent to cover the large distances between enclosures. Online tickets are available and provide reduced admission.
Visitors can stay overnight in Zoofari Lodge, Savannah Cabins, or Billabong Camp to experience the nocturnal sounds and behaviors of the animals. The accommodations sit directly on the grounds and allow early-morning encounters with the residents.
