Dubbo RAAF Stores Depot, Military storage base in Dubbo, Australia
Dubbo RAAF Stores Depot is a former military base with five Igloo storage buildings and three Bellman hangars spread across 38 hectares of mixed grassland and forest. The structures remain standing and display the construction style of World War II airfield facilities.
The Royal Australian Air Force established this inland facility in 1940 as a strategic storage center for aircraft parts, ammunition, and bombs during wartime. By 1945 it had grown into the nation's largest military storage complex.
The grounds show signs of Wiradjuri presence through marked trees and scattered artifacts that speak to their long connection with this land.
The site gained heritage protection in 2004 and is open to visitors who want to walk the grounds and view the structures. The terrain is mostly accessible on foot, allowing you to see the buildings from different angles.
The facility served multiple purposes after the war, including flood relief operations and later support services for Vietnam Veterans. This versatility shows how military installations adapted when their original purpose ended.
