Echo Point, Scenic viewpoint at Katoomba, Australia.
Echo Point is a scenic viewpoint on the edge of Katoomba in New South Wales, with a wide observation deck overlooking Jamison Valley and the sandstone cliffs of the Blue Mountains. The platform sits at the cliff edge and gives a direct, open view of the Three Sisters rock formation rising above the forested valley floor.
The area around this viewpoint became a tourism destination in the 1920s, when Orphan Rock drew most of the visitor attention rather than the Three Sisters. Over time the three-pillar formation took over as the defining feature of the site, eventually becoming what most people come to see.
The name Echo Point comes from the way the cliffs reflect sound back to the viewer, something you can still test by calling out toward the valley. The Gundungurra story behind the Three Sisters describes three young women turned to stone for their protection, a tale that gives the formation a meaning beyond its geological shape.
The observation deck is reached by wide, paved paths and is accessible to visitors with limited mobility. Several walking trails begin nearby, ranging from easy routes along the cliff edge to steep descents into the valley, so solid footwear is worth considering before you set off.
The Giant Stairway, a set of steps cut into the cliff face below the platform, was carved in the 1930s and was once considered a standard part of any visit to this spot. Descending these stairs brings the rock face up close in a way that is completely different from watching it from above.
